Scientific Director for Cancer, Genomics England
Alona joined Genomics England in 2015, where she leads a team of genomic data scientists in the capacity of Scientific Director for Cancer. Alona obtained her PhD in Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology from the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel in 2000. She continued her research career as a postdoc with Prof Barry Honig at Columbia University, New York where she was working on developing computational methods for analysing regulatory regions in eukaryotic genes as well as on recognition of sequence-specific DNA structures by transcription factor proteins. In 2007 Alona undertook a Lecturer position in Bioinformatics at Birkbeck College, University of London with the main focus on sequence analysis, gene regulatory networks and its applications to embryonic development. Alona’s team at Genomics England is focusing on maximising benefits of clinical whole genome sequencing for cancer patients through developing strategies for analysis and interpretation of genomic and clinical data.
