Advanced Cancer Treatments
Elaine is an expert in explaining detailed science in an accessible and interesting way, making her talks ideal for those without a scientific background. In her talk she’ll tackle two closely linked topics of antibody-based treatments and immunotherapy. She’ll firstly describe progress in antibody-drug conjugates – antibodies that deliver chemotherapy direct to cancer cells. These have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years. Elaine will discuss their key elements – antibody, linker and drug – and the efforts made to improve them. Elaine will also discuss the pick-and-mix approach, describing treatments such as bi-specific T cell engagers and CAR T cells. In these treatments, pieces of antibodies are spliced together with other proteins to activate cancer-fighting T cells. Lastly, no talk on immunotherapy is complete without mention of checkpoint inhibitors. Elaine will look at those we have, and those coming through trials.
